Bonde do Role @ Spiegel Tent/Fader Release 10 July 2007

Last Tuesday I finally one of my goals of this summer/spring/as soon as I could get chance. I managed to make it too Fader Magazine's release party at Spiegeltent to see Brazilian hotties Bonde do Role. Now as you know I have become quite fond of Bonde's album and all the stories I've heard about the insane dance parties/shows have made me yearn to see them live, but I missed them because of various reasons. When thisopportunity arised, I did not hesitate to take advantage.

Spiegeltent/world is a glitzy European famed mirrored tent that is set up on pier 17 at South Street Seaport. It is host to many parties and events this summer, but that night the crowd just wasn't feeling it. Maybe it was the high priced alcoholic beverages, or the fact that the free drinks were gone beforeBonde even went on the stage, but I felt sort of cheated of an amzazing experience leaving the show.

I snagged some
photos of the group though..which makes it look like everyone was dancing and having a blast...

Last night my head finally exploded…and then I scraped up the pieces and went out again this afternoon…

This has been a long weekend. I spent many hours in the sun, and had one to many drinks.

On Friday, I headed to Seaport to check out Fujiya & Miyagi and Black Moth Super Rainbow. I arrived at a time that I thought would have been early enough to get a good spot and take some pictures or even see the bands, but it was packed early, and not a lot of people. It was just that the people crowded the stage leaving no room for anyone to get any closer. So I resigned to sitting in the back and drinking my warm beer and enjoyed the songs. In actuality, I quite enjoy Fujiya & Miyagi and BMSR’s music…I just hoped to have a chance to see them perform.

After that it was a quick ride to Union Hall to try and catch the rest of the Neon Lights showcase which included…El Jezel, Mancino, Thrushes, and De Novo Dahl. I didn’t make it tin time to see Jezel or Mancino, sadly, but I did arrive to see the Thrushes and De Novo Dahl play solid sets, and made small talk with some friends I haven’t seen in a while…I stumbled home and passed out in my sweatbox of an apartment trying to recover for Saturday’s adventures.

Saturday saw me and my roommate standing outside Brooklyn Bridge Park for 2 hours to see The Boredoms perform…It was hot…but it was worth it. After walking around the spiral and seeing the 77 drums laid out and listening to almost 2 hours of drumming and feedback I went home with migraine and have yet to recover…

Pop Tarts Suck Toasted has a couple of videos

Today I trudge up the street to McCarren Pool to see Dan Deacon…and um it was hot(on so many levels)…

I love seeing Mr. Deacon Live. He embodies the idea of crowd participation…and its more like the crowd becomes mindless and does whatever he says…yes I am including myself in that statement. And the best part is he does all his work in the crowd, so there none of that “on a stage, on a pedestal” stuff that you might hear around town…After the set, I realised I was sun burnt and decided for the welfare of my skin to head home and call it a weekend…

This week is packed chock full of fun things and I’ll be sure to tell you about them in some detail when I get back from said events….

Cheers,

Sean

Midlake & The New Pornographers @ Battery Park (4 July 2007)

For all of you who were upset about missing the ticket give away for the July 4th concert…I have some sad news…The kind people from River to River were handing a very large stack of tickets at the gate/line/maze entrance to the park…Making the whole register online seem pointless.

They day started off overcast but cool for a mid-summer day. When I arrived and met up with some friends, we made our way to a nice spot stage right and laid out a blanket and set down for a nice relaxing day. We were greeted with trays of sandwiches and croissants from staff members.

As the afternoon became gloomier Midlake took the stage and began playing a pleasant mix of songs from last years Trial of Van Occupanther, some older and a couple of new songs that they’ve been working on while on tour. I haven’t been following the bands progress of late, but I’m glad to see that they are starting to get some recognition. Having never seen Midlake before I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I received a warm lazy-day set that would have played just as well in my headphones as it did on stage.

Enter the rain…a light drizzle will you…The New Pornographers took the stage right on schedule and jumped right into a new song of their upcoming Challengers LP. They seamlessly move in and out of their entire repertoire while engaging in some witty on stage banter and throwing out Warriors quotes and claiming that “god bless North America seemed more appropriate today, don’t you agree?”. Halfway through the encore the rain picked up some steam and the umbrellas came out, making for a live show faux pas, but a success none-the-less.

P.S. I misplaced my battery for my camera after recharging it…I hope to find it soon and then I will get some pictures to go with

Ra Ra Riot @ South Street Seaport (29 June 2007)

It was the show we’ve all been waiting for…

After the unexpected and untimely departure of drummer John Pike, Ra Ra Riot returned to New York City. Everyone I had spoken to prior to the show didn’t know what to expect…What we got was an amazingly energetic performance. The opening song exploded in my face with an unknown drummer pounding out the beat. I’ve never seen the members of Ra Ra Riot move that much on stage. Maybe it was the fresh air, or perhaps it was some pent up aggression being released, but they were out to prove to the naysayers that it wasn’t over for them. The show ended up being the performance by them that I’ve seen so far.

Man Man @ McCarren Pool (1 July 2007)

Sunday saw me in the deep end of McCarren Pool to see Dengue Fever and Man Man. LA’s Dengue, with their culturally fused funk was the best way to jump into another Man Man show while the DJs slowly switched from those sweet summer jams to a more sparsely infused percussive sound as Man Man donned their white war paint and took the stage. Being from Philly, I’ve come to expect a great live show from the boys, but it had been 15 months since I saw them last and this was outdoors so I was left to wonder if that energy transfer or would it be dispersed among the few clouds that dotted the afternoon sky. Of course my doubt was wiped away in a matter of moments. They never cease to amaze me with how tight they continue to become, and with their on stage ‘antics’ if you will…I’d be hard pressed to find a better all around live show. Man Man changed my idea of what a live show could be, and I highly recommend you making the effort to see them when they come through your city.
