Midlake & The New Pornographers @ Battery Park (4 July 2007)

For all of you who were upset about missing the ticket give away for the July 4th concert…I have some sad news…The kind people from River to River were handing a very large stack of tickets at the gate/line/maze entrance to the park…Making the whole register online seem pointless.

They day started off overcast but cool for a mid-summer day. When I arrived and met up with some friends, we made our way to a nice spot stage right and laid out a blanket and set down for a nice relaxing day. We were greeted with trays of sandwiches and croissants from staff members.

As the afternoon became gloomier Midlake took the stage and began playing a pleasant mix of songs from last years Trial of Van Occupanther, some older and a couple of new songs that they’ve been working on while on tour. I haven’t been following the bands progress of late, but I’m glad to see that they are starting to get some recognition. Having never seen Midlake before I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I received a warm lazy-day set that would have played just as well in my headphones as it did on stage.

Enter the rain…a light drizzle will you…The New Pornographers took the stage right on schedule and jumped right into a new song of their upcoming Challengers LP. They seamlessly move in and out of their entire repertoire while engaging in some witty on stage banter and throwing out Warriors quotes and claiming that “god bless North America seemed more appropriate today, don’t you agree?”. Halfway through the encore the rain picked up some steam and the umbrellas came out, making for a live show faux pas, but a success none-the-less.

P.S. I misplaced my battery for my camera after recharging it…I hope to find it soon and then I will get some pictures to go with
